This is a Sony CD recorder:

This unit was doing something very specific. It was skipping backwards. CDs can skip forwards (the time counter jumps ahead) or it can skip backwards, (the time counter jumps back). Skipping backwards usually means the sled that the optic CD Laser rides on is not moving freely on it's rails. This is something that can be fixed. (sometimes) I took this unit apart and removed the transport and disassembled it to get access to the sled. I cleaned the Lens just in case but more importantly I lubed the rails that the sled rides on with Teflon oil. Reassembled and tested it all morning. No more skipping WOOHOO.

There is one important thing I must say. THIS DOES NOT MEAN I CAN FIX EVERY CD PLAYER THAT SKIPS. Most CD player can not be fixed and most are not worth even trying. So do not bring me your $50.00 Walmart CD player and expect me to fix it. But if you have a $1000.00 CD player/recorder that is skipping backwards then maybe I can do something for you.
